What is peptide therapy?
Peptide therapy refers to the prescription and administration of peptide-based medicines under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner. In Australia, these medicines are prescribed via the TGA's Special Access Scheme (SAS) or through TGA-licensed compounding pharmacies.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signalling molecules in the body. Different peptide medicines have different mechanisms and are prescribed for different clinical purposes — from weight management and hormone optimisation to injury recovery and longevity.
Any prescribing decision is made by the treating practitioner after an individual consultation, where clinically appropriate. Peptide medicines cannot be legally purchased in Australia without a valid prescription.
